What is paradise?
Love
A private island surrounded by an unpolluted ocean with calm clear water on one half and perfect surf on the other
Coffee brought to me in bed... in a tent ... on that same island
What do you want the world to know about you?
If there’s an amazing opportunity/job/adventure, I’m not going to hesitate - I say yes let’s go.
You are a photographer right... could you tell me a bit about that?
Yes, I’m a photographer. That’s been my career since I was about 18. I have a background in fine art, and I’ve been really lucky to also move into a life of shooting fashion/adventure/lifestyle - my lifestyle actually - surfing and motorcycles. I travel, surf, ride, and document for my art and for brands - even my brand. I’m a co-owner of a new clothing company, Salty & Pine, with a close friend of mine (Anne), and we make handmade kaftans up in Portland.
What has been your best investment?
I’ve spent the last few years investing in time. Time for myself, time for others, and just time for nothing.
What are your thoughts on sobriety?
Personally, I’m a big fan of sobriety. Time is precious and fleeting, and I want to be present for every minute of it. Alcohol has brought a lot of pain to many people I love, myself included, and I don’t want to be part of the drinking club anymore. It’s a very personal choice and not everyone will agree with it, but sobriety has brought me peace.
What have you learned from your dog?
Ah, Tony has taught me so many things, but at the moment, he’s teaching me about gratitude. Unfortunately, he’s very sick right now and only has a few more months to live, so he’s teaching me to be excited about every day and to think of every moment as a gift. Not to concentrate on the sadness of death but to concentrate on the joy of having him (or anyone that I love) in my life.
What is good?
Life, lime popsicles (paletas), and pizza.
Tell me one Heidi fun fact....
Ha, hmm, I lived in a tent for about 5 years, and I used to do gymnastics on a horse - okay, sorry, that’s two facts.
Describe empowered....
For me, empowered means having the freedom to make your own choices.
At karaoke what song do you pick?
What core values do you think are important to live by?
Be kind, honest, and have integrity, but be authentic. Smile at someone and say hi - people want to know they are seen and everyone wants to feel loved. I always run a couple of simple sayings through my mind daily: “say what you mean and mean what you say” and “treat others the way you want to be treated yourself” - oh, and I do wear a shirt that says “be polite” - that too, haha.
What are a few life lessons you have learned through photography?
It’s not about me, it’s about them. Always be ready and open for surprises. When you're locked in on a shot (or your own thoughts), remember to turn around - there’s usually someone or something amazing happening right behind you. Be direct and communicate clearly.
What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success?
I’m enthusiastic.
