Hi friends meet @whitneyskauge. She is a film maker who moved from Montana to Hollywood in search of the dream. She is clever, cool and beats to her own drum. Follow along this week as we get to know her better.
Why are movies important?
@whitneyskauge: How much time do you have because this is one of my favorite things to talk about. Basically they are a reflection of society and have the ability, and some might say responsibility, to enact social change. Movies are a vehicle you know? They can help you understand yourself and the world around you better. People might think movies are just for entertainment, that the actors and everyone else involved are just rich people playing pretend, but it's more than that. Movies are one of the if not the most popular art form. There’s a lot of weight and thought that has to be taken in consideration in terms of what you chose to show. The amount of representation that can occur in 90 minutes can be life-changing. Are you going to show harmful stereotypes or are you going to break the mold? Everyone deserves to feel seen.That’s what movies do; they tell people they matter. That’s powerful.
What life skills are rarely taught but extremely useful?
@whitneyskauge:
Self care. It can be very difficult to take care of yourself. And I don’t mean how to do your laundry or pay bills. But how to say no. How to ask for help. How to give yourself credit. Those are the hard ones. It should happen at a young age you know? I think K-12 should have like a mental care class where kids learn how to process feelings and other essential life skills that are focused on the internal. .A lot of shit would change if we all had better coping mechanisms.
Do you like things to be carefully planned or do you prefer to just go with the flow?
@whitneyskauge: If it is something that requires a lot of time and attention I'm definitely more of a planner.I have to at least have a basic game plan or else I’ll get stressed out and that’s just not necessary. But with anything creative I try to go with the flow. I’m not that person that has intricate notes or concepts. I just have to feel it out.
