The Unstuck Woman" is a passion project that took root in my heart around four to five years ago. It began with a simple yet profound idea: to capture the essence of inspiring women through photography and intimate interviews, with the aim of guiding and connecting others on their own journeys.

Driven by a desire to spotlight the strength, resilience, and wisdom of women from diverse backgrounds, I embarked on a mission to seek out these remarkable individuals. What started as a personal endeavor soon blossomed into a community-driven movement, fueled by the empowering stories and experiences shared by the women I had the privilege to photograph and interview.

Word of mouth became the lifeblood of the project, as each woman I had the honor of capturing on film became a beacon, spreading the word to others who were equally deserving of recognition. Through this organic process, a network of support and empowerment began to take shape, weaving together the threads of shared experiences and aspirations.

Each photo shoot and interview became not only a celebration of individual triumphs but also a testament to the collective power of women supporting women. From artists and entrepreneurs to activists and everyday heroes, "The Unstuck Woman" has become a tapestry of inspiration, offering guidance and connection to all who encounter its stories.

As I continue to document the journeys of these incredible women, my hope remains steadfast: that their stories will serve as beacons of light for those navigating their own paths, reminding us all that resilience, courage, and determination know no bounds. Together, we rise, united in our strength and unwavering in our pursuit of a more empowered future.

Sloane

October 09, 2017

Today we introduce you to the lovely @elizasloane. Sloane is a jewelry designer, surfer, world traveler and lover of animals. She also makes a mean cup of chai tea. Fully absolutely honored to be sharing her story and thoughts on life.

What is home? Home is feeling at peace with myself wherever I may be. The feeling of being grounded and inspired.

What did you learn from skydiving? That my body and mind can do so much more than I thought, calmly. The things we think are so scary turn out to be not that scary at all. Most of the time, anxiety and fear come from wanting to be able to control or know the outcome of a situation.

What are your thoughts on fate? When we learn to see the signs and synchronicities in life, we can have a hand in controlling our fate. But we shouldn't get so caught up that every time we stumble upon a coincidence, we think, "this is it." People, places, and events are often stepping stones... Use your intuition.

What are your thoughts on free will? This is a touchy subject. We don't always have complete control of our reality, but we do have control of our mindset and how we respond.

Why did you start making jewelry? I found out I loved working with metal and stone. I am completely captivated by alchemy and working with my hands. I also saw a void in the industry, and there really was not much jewelry I wanted to purchase or wear. Initially, I wanted to bridge the gap between southwestern inspired jewelry and sea-inspired jewelry. Now, my pieces have evolved into an aesthetic of their own which I don't feel I need to label.

If I go back to India what is something I have to do? Volunteer with Animal Aid Unlimited. During my time spent there, my heart broke a million times into a million pieces, but it also instilled so much hope in me. Some of the animals there have been through the most horrific things imaginable, but they are such resilient souls who can teach us so much.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. The four agreements have eliminated so much unnecessary drama and self-doubt from my life... Thank you, Miguel Ruiz.

Tell me one Sloane fun fact..... My name means Warrior.

What's the difference in east coast surfing vs. west coast surfing? On the east coast where I grew up, I did a lot more waiting and wave chasing than actual surfing... But when it's good, it's REALLY good.

What is paradise? Currently, it is a simple day spent doing what I love. Waking up with the sunrise and walking my rescue dog Rishi, taking the time to make a hot cup of coffee or tea and a nice breakfast, burning some palo santo or sage, setting intentions for the day, spending a good chunk of time at my workbench, catching a yoga class, going on a hike, or watching the sunset preferably from in the water with some sea sisters, and then either making a delicious home-cooked meal or eating at one of my favorite Indian or Thai restaurants with good friends. In bed early with a good book and a cup of tea.

What is good? If it truly feels good, it is good.

What do you want the world to know about you? That I care.

What does love feel like? A great adventure.

What is your earliest memory? Making dribble castles in the sand, only for them to be washed away by the incoming tide. I guess I learned the art of healthy detachment at an early age.

Today we introduce you to artist and professional musician @nicoturner. Nico has spent the last 10 or so years traveling the world making music with acts like @catpowerofficial and @vincentgallo_official.

Nice Turner

October 02, 2017

Explain the feeling of transition....

Reversing a river.

What was the best part of being a touring musician?

Making deep lasting friendships with people all over the world.

What does a great day look like?

Key ingredients: Meals and creation with best friends and lots of laughter.

What's your advice for someone who is thinking of becoming a professional musician?

Don't drink and don't do drugs. There's no need to lower your vibration. Instead, learn your craft. Use the nerves. Nervousness and excitement are really the same thing.

You are considering a career change..... what are some of your fears?

That I've forgotten what it means to begin. I haven't, but reversing a river takes time and effort.

What is the best advice you ever received?

You can do anything you truly put your mind to. Treat everyone you meet with the same respect, and always fall up the stairs.

If you could ask god one question what would it be?

I know I said I could handle all of this before I got here, but did I mention how?

How do you feel about sex, drugs and rock and roll?

It's an old archetype. Why not reinvent the wheel and make it about good health, love, and creation?

What does love feel like?

Infallible, constant, unchanging. A chair lift next to stairs that carries you when you can't walk.

What is paradise?

Truly connecting with people.

You have 4 hours in a airport, what do you do?

Take the opportunity to be still... and probably write a letter.

Tell me one Nico fun fact....

I can parallel park a sixteen-foot truck at night in New York City.

What did you learn from living in New York City?

How to be punctual.

HEIDI ZUMBRUN

September 25, 2017

This is @Heidizumbrun she is a photographer, surfer, motorcyclist and all around amazing person. Very happy to be sharing her story!

What is paradise?

  • Love

  • A private island surrounded by an unpolluted ocean with calm clear water on one half and perfect surf on the other

  • Coffee brought to me in bed... in a tent ... on that same island

What do you want the world to know about you?

If there’s an amazing opportunity/job/adventure, I’m not going to hesitate - I say yes let’s go.

You are a photographer right... could you tell me a bit about that?

Yes, I’m a photographer. That’s been my career since I was about 18. I have a background in fine art, and I’ve been really lucky to also move into a life of shooting fashion/adventure/lifestyle - my lifestyle actually - surfing and motorcycles. I travel, surf, ride, and document for my art and for brands - even my brand. I’m a co-owner of a new clothing company, Salty & Pine, with a close friend of mine (Anne), and we make handmade kaftans up in Portland.

What has been your best investment?

I’ve spent the last few years investing in time. Time for myself, time for others, and just time for nothing.

What are your thoughts on sobriety?

Personally, I’m a big fan of sobriety. Time is precious and fleeting, and I want to be present for every minute of it. Alcohol has brought a lot of pain to many people I love, myself included, and I don’t want to be part of the drinking club anymore. It’s a very personal choice and not everyone will agree with it, but sobriety has brought me peace.

What have you learned from your dog?

Ah, Tony has taught me so many things, but at the moment, he’s teaching me about gratitude. Unfortunately, he’s very sick right now and only has a few more months to live, so he’s teaching me to be excited about every day and to think of every moment as a gift. Not to concentrate on the sadness of death but to concentrate on the joy of having him (or anyone that I love) in my life.

What is good?

Life, lime popsicles (paletas), and pizza.

Tell me one Heidi fun fact....

Ha, hmm, I lived in a tent for about 5 years, and I used to do gymnastics on a horse - okay, sorry, that’s two facts.

Describe empowered....

For me, empowered means having the freedom to make your own choices.

At karaoke what song do you pick?

What core values do you think are important to live by?

Be kind, honest, and have integrity, but be authentic. Smile at someone and say hi - people want to know they are seen and everyone wants to feel loved. I always run a couple of simple sayings through my mind daily: “say what you mean and mean what you say” and “treat others the way you want to be treated yourself” - oh, and I do wear a shirt that says “be polite” - that too, haha.

What are a few life lessons you have learned through photography?

It’s not about me, it’s about them. Always be ready and open for surprises. When you're locked in on a shot (or your own thoughts), remember to turn around - there’s usually someone or something amazing happening right behind you. Be direct and communicate clearly.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success?

I’m enthusiastic.

Monica Reyes

September 21, 2017

Today we introduce you to the lovely @sheismoonreyes. Monica is an art director for @delafemme, a wardrobe stylist and vintage collector. I feel so grateful to be sharing a bit of her story and was incredibly inspired by her flowing electric energy.

What has been your best investment?

The best investment does not come in the form of money. It's been spending those rare in-between moments with my family and life-long friends. They have helped me get through the hardest parts of my life by just sharing their joy, bountiful energy, and an endless sense of humor. As I get older, so do the people I care about. I realize life is too short. People I love have died along the way, and any of us can leave this world, at any given time. It's something we take for granted, a lot. I still think about the ones I haven't spoken to or seen in a long time. I wish we'd still be in touch if we didn't let life get in the way so much.

In the game of truth or dare what do you pick?

Dare. As long as it allows me to live for tomorrow.

Why is art important?

Art is like breathing. It's the greatest and most pure outlet for artists to truly and 100% express what they are thinking, feeling, and seeing. We live in a totally systematic society where we are supposed to feel safe living in a world of routines. What's life without feeling the mess of this world? I love seeing what that looks like in someone's brain.

Please tell me about Delafemme....

Masculine de La FEMME was founded by my co-partner, Dan Monick, and I in 2015. It is an online publication based on women empowerment and gender equality. I find the artists, style, and art direct. Dan photographs them on bw 35mm film. We encourage truth and honesty by shooting with 35mm film, natural lighting, no make-up, and no post-production (retouching). You can see more here: www.masculinedelafemme.com.

Tell me one Monica fun fact....

I was a freight elevator operator for a production tower in Hollywood. It was one of my first odd jobs out here. I made up my own outfits even though my boss told me it wasn't mandatory. I wore a mini skirt, heels, a white button-up, and a black tie or bow tie and took everyone up to their jobs. I soon scored my first solo art show at the corner coffee shop nearby. During the night of the opening, I sat in the back, told no one I was the artist, and quietly left soon after. At the time, talking to strangers about my art seemed more like a death sentence than a celebration. This was 11 years ago. I've come a long way.

What does love feel like?

Love is constant. Love is honest. Love is truth, compassionate, forgiving, unconditional, and eternal.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

  • "Know what you want and don't be afraid to ask for it"

  • "Don't show all your cards so soon"

  • "Have Faith. Live in Love"

  • "When someone opens the car door for you, open their door from the inside" - I watched a couple do that once, and I fell in love with both of them.

What is paradise?

Camping out in the mountains or desert and listening to absolute silence.

Do you believe in miracles?

Yes. Every day.

What is one word that describes you?

Energetic

Describe empowered?

Fearlessness, Self-awareness, Humility, Gratitude

How do you overcome fear?

Taking three deep breaths, prayer, and having faith.

Today we introduce you to the wildflower that is @lucymaesunday. Born and raised on the central coast of California Lucy is the essence of a deep breath and open skies. We are so happy to be sharing her beauty this week.

Lucy Mae Sunday

September 11, 2017

What core principles and values do you think are important to live by?

Be gentle with yourself, and kind to others.

What is paradise?

A stable mind, mornings, laughing so hard it hurts, Mary Oliver.

What are your thoughts on meditation?

Our mind controls our bodies. In the west, we so heavily emphasize taking care of one's body—working out, eating healthy—but we don't emphasize taking care of our minds. Meditation is that. It is a way to befriend and know yourself, and more importantly, others. Learning to work with one's mind is the realest, most sustainable way I know to develop peace and understanding in our totally messed up world.

What has been your best investment?

Meditation practice, putting in the time to work on communication with friends, family, and lovers, and house plants.

Has there been any one moment that helped define your life?

Birth?

What does love feel like?

Coming home.

Tell me a Lucy fun fact....

I snort when I laugh.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Slow down, keep going, watch your aggression, keep your tender heart. Do your best and forget the rest.

You work with a non-profit that teaches at-risk youth mindfulness. Could you tell me a bit about that?

The non-profit I work for is called Akasa Community Outreach. We partner with public schools in Los Angeles, providing a wellness curriculum teaching gardening, cooking, and mindfulness. Mindfulness is inherently a tool for self-reliance and self-awareness, empowering our youth, our future, with the experiential knowledge that they are not their thoughts and emotions, and that they can take a pause before reacting to such. Through practice, they can "ride the horse rather than the horse riding them," which, in my mind, is the best fight to fight.

Window seat or aisle?

Train: window. Plane: aisle.

If you found a finger, what would you do?

Feel really sad for the person who lost their finger.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success?

Vulnerabilconfidence. I made a new word because you said one.

Madison Isbell

September 04, 2017

Today we introduce you to @madisonisbell. She is a traveler, collector surfer and all around awesome alligator.

When you were 18 you moved from Fiji to June Lake in northern California. Could you tell me a bit about that? Fiji had become my home at the time with a unique blend of rapture and stifling calm. On an island you get this sensation of being isolated as if your out on an invisible limb, everything you learn comes from or has association with the ocean. I knew it was time for change but I spent my formative years marinating with the pace of nature. Moving to the Eastern Sierras was a beautiful shift. Instead of that vast blue you are nestled in-between massive peaks of granite carved by glaciers. It dwarfs your sense of isolation and it calmed a lot of my late teenage angst...all those imaginary melodramas pale in comparison. I still live for that unavoidable sensation of knowing the universe is infinitely larger then ourselves.

What is paradise? Salty Skin Afforded Solitude Presence Good Books Clean Sheets Empty Horizons

What advice would you give to a woman who is thinking of traveling alone? Do it. Start in one place, get out of your comfort zone, and then stay a little longer… Don’t over plan but do your research. Discard vanity, be aware of danger, and master any skills necessary. Bring a good book and an open mind.

What is good? Anything that is useful or brings absolute joy.

If you could ask god one question what would it be? I’m spiritual, not religious, and on that statement alone I’d have to ask a question about humanity. As a whole why are we so detrimental and disconnected from the natural world.

What is your earliest memory? Sunlight through overgrown bougainvillea on a porch.

What has been your best investment? My best investments have been anything that facilitated the experience’s that I know will matter when it’s over. So far, good food - music - company plane tickets, my truck, surfboards, and dogs.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Everything in moderation, including moderation.

What are the most important lessons you have learned so far, in your career or life journey? Be motivated by hope rather then fear. It takes an insane amount of bravery to become kinder as we age, more at ease with ourselves and the world around us. Allow the mind to drop into the body whenever you can. Relish in the complicated layers, and don’t take any of it too seriously.

Describe empowered? Recognizing and owning that you are responsible for the quality of your own life… There is a certain amount of self discipline required to be free.

What are some of the core values you think are important to live by? Practice gratitude, never stop learning, rest when you can, and simplify where possible.

Today we introduce you to the uber cool @jurikooo. She is a yoga instructor, Ironman finisher and maven for @lululemonjp. She also recently founded @igniteliving a yoga studio in Japan

You completed an ironman race not too long ago. Could you tell me a bit about that? It's a race consist of 2.4 mile swim, 112mile bike ride and 26.2 Mille run. It was by far the hardest thing I've done mentally and physically. It taught me really you can accomplish anything if you put your mind into it. I love racing so I've done a few marathons and quite a few triathlons without training but this one I really had to focus and train.

What are some of the tricks you used to keep going when you wanted to give up? Focus on breathing and I had a mantra I kept repeating in my head. I also thought about all the people in my life.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of doing an ironman? EAT A LOT during the race and have fun!

What are some of the things you have learned by working with lululemon Japan? I learned

What core values and principles do you think are important to live by? In a game of truth or dare what do you pick?

What do you think is often the difference between people who are good at what they do and people who are great at what they do? Not only that people who are great at what they do love what they do, but they know what they are great at. Knowing your strength and your unique quality that makes you YOU is the key.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success? I think I'm pretty good at connecting with people authentically and being good at drinking helps.

What are some of the lessons you have learned from teaching yoga? People don't remember what you say but they remember how you made them feel. I always think about how I want my students to feel after my class. I used to get nervous about what to say in class but now I try to be my self and just give positive vibes. Even if I say some stupid stuff, that's me.

What are your thoughts on meditation? Meditation is something we should all practice. It's scientifically proven that will enhance your life. I think we are constantly getting so much stimulus and absorbing all the information. Meditation helps you to clear your mind and reset. Helps you to reconnect with yourself. Since I started meditation daily, I can trust my instinct more.

You seem to spend a bit of time in California, what do you love most about coming here? I have some people I wanna see. Also I love going to all the fitness classes and yoga classes. I get inspired when I'm in California.

What is the sweatlife? #thesweatlife is the amazing life I live right now. I try to exercise everyday not only for my physical health but because it feels good. I want to be the best version of me as I can be, and sweating helps me to let go of things I don't need. It makes me remember who I am. I'm in much better mood and I can focus better. It's also about the authentic and real connection you make when you sweat with people. You are truly you when you are sweating your ass off on a hard hike, on a run, or whatever workout you do. You can't lie you are sweating and that's why you can connect with people. I love that.

What are some of your goals for the coming year? 2018 is going to be awesome. I'm gonna create something cool.

What is the best advise you ever received? People don't remember what you said but they remember how you made them feel. So be authentic

Today we introduce you to the boss herself @laurenmlilly. She is the founder of @yellow108, @howladventures, @howlclubhouse and partners in a super cool bed and breakfast in Mexico called @lacasamx. I took me about a year to link up with this lovely lady and it was so worth the wait. Such a peaceful and inspirational woman.

Lauren Lilly

August 21, 2017

Why the name yellow108? The name Yellow 108 is inspired by sunshine. Yellow #108 in the Pantone book of colors is a bright and sunny yellow. Yellow is the color of the sun, and sunshine makes everyone happy. It’s science.

What are some of the unforeseen obstacles and challenges you have had to overcome in operating your own business? Both personally and professionally. Running a business where you are responsible for the livelihood of other humans is a massive responsibility I do not take lightly. I would say my greatest challenge is always maintaining the ability to guide, listen, and provide regardless of other humans gratitude or perspective. To be the most honest and raw, I have a really hard time giving my all to my team when it’s not received as that. I’ve learned to let go of expectations and to enjoy “giving” without necessarily receiving gratitude or understanding which has not been an easy place to get too. My work/life is personal to me. I never get to clock out. It’s my life. So I have to be EXTRA mindful of life balance. I have to make a point to be active and healthy and do non work activities that are mindless and carefree. Recharging is the single most important part of being a leader so you can keep your strength and emotions balanced and focused on the bigger picture. By nature, humans instinctually operate in “survival mode”. But we are just making beautiful things over here at Y108 and Howl, we aren’t saving lives, so reminding my team that this is supposed to be fun also reminds myself. It’s actually that simple. =)

What are some of the things you do to maintain a work/life balance? Travelling, outdoor activities, live music, smiling, laughing, dreaming… all things that keep me balanced and happy.

What do you usually eat for breakfast? Smoothie!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business? You have to trust and believe in yourself 100%. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will either.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Everything is an energy. You have to stay open to receive. Worry and fear do not allow you to stay open and further prolong the very things you’d like to receive. I know it sounds too simple and easy but it’s actually difficult. I’ve worked on this for years and years and I am living proof that it’s true and it works.

What book should I read next? A New Earth

What has been your best investment? The only thing that comes to mind here is consistently working on myself to be the best human I can be.

What do you think is often the difference between people who are good at what they do and people who are great at what they do? You have to take the time to continually adapt and change. Nothing is the same forever. So maintaining the ability to change is so crucial.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success? I can say this with complete confidence, I’m an excellent communicator.

Window seat or aisle? Aisle

What would you like for your next birthday? A day off, haha

@nouelriel is an artist, nomad, designer and free spirit. She has a love for eastern philosophy and practices. This week we share her thoughts on love, the Ten Commandments and change.

Nouel Riel

August 14, 2017

What is paradise? Paradise to me is an unfettered mind.

What would you like for your next birthday? For my birthday I'd like a medium format film scanner, a new passport & peach scented car freshener.

What is good? A full stomach is good. I know good or bad are just illusions, but a good meal is definitely good and grand and deeply desired right now.

Are you a napper? I'm the best napper, but I call any sleep a nap. I nap almost every day after meditation, but the afternoon dream time symbolism is hyper amped up so naps feel like time well spent.

Do people ever really change? You can never force someone else to change, but a personal choice of evolution is always possible any moment!

What do you want the world to know about you? I can see you and if you want to, you can see all of me too.

What is your favorite childhood toy? Favorite childhood and current toys are rocks.

Do you play a musical instrument? I don't play an instrument yet, but I have this electric guitar next to me that I'd like to learn about sooner than later.

Do you get excited about the Olympics? They're not something I remember are happening or really think about, but I was a gymnast for a long time, so I enjoy watching that. There's always this beautiful moment of triumph that unfurls with athletics which is a great reminder of possibility, focus and deep commitment.

Is there anything you would change about the Ten Commandments? I would add "Thou shall dress in drag at least once a year." and "Thou shall not have kids before burning through a good amount of your own bullshit karma. Amen." That second addition is like a save the pure and wise children from unnecessary trauma foundation.

What are your thoughts on meditation? Meditation certainly changed my life. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to wake up. There's another way and mediation is my means of navigating the seen and unseen.

What is your earliest memory? I think it's a care bear birthday cake my mom made for me when I was two or three.

What has been your best investment? Myself.

What does love feel like? Love feels like two free birds flying parallel.

Ashmore Ellis

August 07, 2017

@ashmore is the mother of many things. Three puppies, an all women's motorcycle event @babesrideout and her newest venture @sierrastakeout which is a camping/riding gathering that she started with her husband. Her warm caring and nurturing attitude radiates and instantly made me feel at peace. Feeling ultra happy to have made contact with this epic inspiring earthling.

You co-founded babes ride out. Could you tell me a bit about that? It was an accident. After we opened up the experience to all ladies in 2013, it snowballed so quickly that we just held on for dear life for that first year trying to figure out how to grow this event the right way. We weren’t event producers, we had no magical skills, but we were and still are very much invested in giving ladies a weekend to ride motorcycles and meet each while growing the 2 wheel community as a whole. Our event is meant to serve as a connector that gets more ladies out camping, attending more events, and becoming better riders.

What are a few of the jobs you had before working at Stance and creating babes ride out? I was raised to believe there is no shame in hard work and starting from the bottom is a blessing. I remembered being made fun of for where I worked all the time but I wasn’t going to quit or give in. I was a waitress at Olive Garden during the day and server at beach bar called Harpoon Harrys at night. After I got my degree, I worked as a secretary & front desk clerk, was a customer service representative for a sunglass company which meant I mailed out tiny screws all day and had people yelling at me from 9-5 because they sat on their sunglasses. I also folded tee shirts for hours at a time, cleaned toilets, mopped floors, I can go on.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success? #1 I’ve always had the mindset that nothing is impossible with a little bit of imagination and hard work. Every road block has a detour, every problem has a solution. There is a way, you just have to be creative enough to find it and start working towards it. #2 I’ve learned it's okay to say “no”.

You and your husband put together your first event, the Sierra Stake Out. Could you tell me about it? We just finished up our first Sierra Stake Out which is a motorcycle campout that is similar to BRO in the fact that it is a true riding event but for everyone. SSO is in northern California’s gold country about 70 miles east of Sacramento and backs up to where the Donner Party met their fate. The riding is mind-blowing and the rivers, lakes, waterfalls, mountain passes are incredible. I love producing motorcycle events and nothing makes me happier than seeing people come together, laugh, ride motorcycles, and walk away with experiences that will last them a lifetime.

What has been your best investment? My marriage. We invest a lot of time in each other and it’s been incredible to see what we’ve accomplished together through believing in one another and supporting each other’s dreams. Mike has always been the type that motivates people without even trying. I admire him, respect him, and he’s helped me focus on what I was put on this earth to do. He’s been my greatest gift from the universe.

What are the most important lessons you have learned so far, in your career or life journey? Dwelling on mistakes is the biggest waste of your energy. Acknowledge the mistake and understand it so you don’t make it again, but do not let it throw you off your path.

  • Have empathy for others

  • Listen. Always listen.

  • Make time for yourself.

Describe empowered... Being confident in who you are, what you are working towards, and in each decision you make to get there. To truly believe you are 100% in charge of your destiny allows your mind to be free from any doubt you may have in yourself.

GLORIA J. NOTO

August 01, 2017

Today we introduce you to the incredible @glorianoto the mastermind behind @noto_botanics. Gloria's do it yourself philosophy is an inspiration. Not only does she beautify some of the worlds coolest people with her makeup skills, she has went a step further and created her own product line that is organic and not tested on animals.

You moved out of home when you were 16, could you share what that was like? I moved out at a time when I knew I had to go towards something greater in my life, a life that was authentic to me - without being made to feel bad about who I was and to find out how big I could make my life. I came from a hard home - one that really skewed my ideas of love, of kindness, of grace, and of openness. I knew I wanted something different and I knew I had to make the choice to create that for myself. There is a part of me that is still figuring out what certain things look like - what love feels like - what success means to me - and what my core values are. But making the choice to leave at a young age was absolutely what I had to do. I always felt like something was guiding me, and for whatever reason I had the courage to trust in that. Trust is a huge part of my life and trusting in myself and my intuition has been my biggest and continued lesson in life.

What are some of the core values you believe are important to live by? I have been thinking about this a lot lately actually. I would say trust and honesty are two top values I have in me and I hope to find in others. Authenticity - the courage to be. Kindhearted care for others and empathy. A light heart that is light because it is honest. The things that allow a human to feel at peace in themselves - even when things may not be incredible - the feeling of not needing to seek because they already know that what we seek is already inside of us.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of starting a new project or business? I would say be sure to have an authentic story on why you must bring another business into existence - love your story so much and your reasons why so much because there will be times when the love and purpose for what you will be the one string holding you onto continuing - and that strength and courage make it all worth while. Also, get the right help or team and delegate.

What is the best part of living in LA? That is a cultural hub with incredible weather and geography.

What do you usually eat for breakfast? I don't usually do most things - so it varies -

What are your thoughts on eastern practices? I think that as long as you aren't playing spiritual dress up or spiritually bypassing the lessons to look or seem a certain way (even to yourself) then dive into what connects to you. It always comes down to honesty - mostly with yourself. It comes down to not adopting something to totally smoke smudge right past the essence of what the meaning of it is. If eastern practices are what call you, then run to it, and when you get to it - genuinely dive into it.

What book should I read next? I think it depends on what you are curious about at this time. But I just read the Seeds for the Soul by Chuck Hillig and really took away some valuable information - also A year with Swollen Appendages by Brian Eno.

What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are? I'm not really too sure on how to answer this - but I would have to say Fear has been the obstacle that presents itself to me and can stunt my growth - but I try my best to notice when fear is coming through versus intuition.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success? I would say the power to put the pen to the paper even if I don't know all the words to the sentence yet. Meaning - if I want to start something, I start it - and then learn what I need to learn along the way. I think, for me, that is very important because I can often have an idea and let it dissolve unless I take action.

When do you feel most present? Right now.

Blake Spencer

July 21, 2017

How did you fall into becoming a breath work facilitator?

I had been introduced to breathwork from a long time therapist in 2012 and magically found myself at Michael Brian Baker's workshop and knew from that moment that sharing the power of breath was my work and service.

Could you please explain what breath work is?

Breathwork is a powerful ancient healing modality used to release stress, tension, stuck energy in the physical, emotional, and spirit bodies. The style that I teach is done as an active meditation while lying down and is incredibly transformational.

You recently moved from the city to the countryside, what are some of the perks of living in nature?

Everything! I am a lot more calm. Waking up to the sound of birds vs the sound of cars has centered my nervous system in a way I didn't know possible. I am able to slow down a lot more and use my hours more productively and wisely. I feel like I am in a time vortex out here, I have so much more time then I ever had before. I get to connect to the natural world every day so I don't crave it the way I used to or get short circuited from overstimulation.

What are some of the core values you believe are important to live by?

I've been working with the four agreements, which, I find an incredible tool to live my life by. Showing up in integrity, responsibility, courage, and service are of great importance to me. At my core is the choice to show up for others to help the whole of humanity, which in turn helps the whole of the planet. Living as simply as possibly and remembering I need a lot less than I think I do is a beautiful reminder and lesson, as well.

What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are?

I feel a lot of gratitude for my obstacles because they created my desire to guide others to feel connected and embodied.. Both my parents struggled with drug addiction when I was growing up, so I spent some time with each of them in that space, which was not so pretty at certain points and subsequently, I bounced around a lot to different family members and friends. I feel because of those times I developed some challenging dis-ease in my body, which was diagnosed as depression, anxiety, etc., etc... and spent most of my college years trying to rearrange and process things more gently in my body. It hasn't been the easiest path, but it has taught me how to deeply love myself.

Tell me one Blake fun fact?

I am going to be a singer in a rock band when I grow up and shred on the electric guitar.

What type of people are you drawn to?

All things weird, I like to call them weirdys.

What book should I read next?

"Women Who Run with Wolves," it is important.

What has been your best investment?

My keyboard, I love being able to make sounds and music and sing to anything sing-songy.

I would imagine helping people through emotional trauma could be exhausting. What are some of the things you do to keep your batteries charged?

It is only exhausting if I am trying to use my own energy and power. I am in the process of learning how to channel and bring through source, which is infinite. To care for myself, I take salt baths to soak and cleanse. I use a lot of essential oil sprays, palo santo, sage. I work with all kinds of plants (tea, tinctures, herbs), plants are conscious beings put on this planet to guide and help us on our journey. I also work with guides, specifically the animal realm: hawks, crows, deer, bee, spider. And other spirit guides and ask them to help and assist me in my work and to bring forth what is most necessary and needed for the person I am working with.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success?

I think my ability to relate to others has really helped me create a thriving and regenerative practice.

What are the most important lessons you have learned so far, in your career or life journey? This could be anything from very simple small lessons, too much larger bigger lessons.

Gratitude and creativity are the quickest ways to connect to source. Nature is medicine. Community and support is medicine. ALSO I am a magical cosmic being having a human experience AND this work I share is not about me, I am actually and quite literally doing nothing but witnessing. So to sum it up, the lesson of using magic in the most humble way.

5. What is a saying you hate? I can't think of one right now.

Farron Feiner

July 10, 2017

Today we introduce to an absolute wizard on the loom. @farronfeiner weavings absolutely transform ordinary spaces into living gallery's. She is fun, unique and inspiring.

Could you tell me a bit about your artwork? How did you start and where would you love to see it go? I love interpreting my surroundings through unexpected colors and texture. I use weaving as a tool to display the beauty of different fibers. Mother Nature is a big inspo too and always incorporated into work. The quiet freedom I feel at the loom echoes the experience I get when I'm in the outdoors, which is probably a reason why it influences my work so much. Weaving gives me that peaceful happiness. I started weaving by happenstance. I had transferred into the textile design program at CSULB and weaving on the loom was a prereq class. I fell in love with it and ended up taking it every semester until I graduated. I've been working on some larger scale weavings recently. Currently I have 4x4' and 3x6' looms. I would love to get a larger loom and work in an even larger scale.

Who are you inspired by? Mobb Deep and 50 Cent. They had Beef (I highly recommend this docu series if you haven't seen it) and were able to get past it and collab on the banger "Outta Control" RIP PRODIGY. Also Nick Cave and so many of my amazing HBIC girlfriends out there killing it.

What are some of the things you do when you're feeling discouraged or in a creative slump? If I'm feeling uninspired, I won't make anything. It's usually I'm just drained and need a day or two off, before the ideas start flooding in and I can't wait to get back on the loom again! If I'm mid project and I don't like where it's heading I step away from it and reexamine it with fresh eyes in the morning. A night's sleep does wonders for me.

What are your thoughts on art school? I didn't go to art school, so I can't speak first hand about it. Seems a little over priced to me, especially since a lot of them leave you with no job opportunities upon graduation. I can tell you none of the working artists I'm friends with went to art school, so it's definitely possible to be successful without it.

What is one of your guilty pleasures? I have no prob owning up to every aspect of myself and don't find anything I do a 'guilty pleasure' but in the spirit of answering the q: Reality TV all day long! I recently dropped down a Real Housewives hole.

What do you think is often the difference between people who are good at what they do and people who are great at what they do? Passion essentially. The 'greats' live and breath it.

What is one talent or strength of yours, which has been critical to your success? Taking risks with my work. I was always so scared to try circles and now I'm a queen at making them! I like pushing myself out of my comfort zone. It helps me grow as an artist and often yields great results. I've also worked with other artists on collabs. Those are so fun! The pillows I made with Lykke Wullf are some of my faves!

What do you believe are the characteristics, actions, habits and behaviours that you both have and use, that have helped you achieve what you have been able to achieve? Listening to your intuition. Whether it's with taking risks artistically or business decisions you're making. Also, believing in yourself. If you want to achieve something, get grinding and make it happen! My parents weren't encouraging of me going to school to be an "artist". They wanted me to get out of college and get a "real job" asap, (Now they are very supportive. I understand where they were coming from. When they were raised there wasn't the opportunities to make it as an artist the way there are now). I ended up in the fashion industry for a few years before I started weaving again.

What are the most important lessons you have learnt so far, in your career or life journey? This could be anything from very simple small lessons, too much larger bigger lessons. Don't let things bother you that you can't control. I'm a sensitive cancer crab and have a tendency to dwell or stress about things but in reality you can't sweat the small stuff! Also "You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore" Christopher Columbus

What is the best advice you have received? My mom is a fantastic interior decorator and I learned a lot about the elements of design from her. Growing up with so much exposure to design, I always had a love for it. Not to toot my own horn, but I have great taste and a keen eye for color combos and playing with textures. There are so many weavers out there today, it's good to have a recognizable style that sets you apart. The elements of my upbringing and the person I am now play a roll in my personal weaving style. Love it or hate it, you know when you're looking at a Farron Feiner weaving.

Tell me one Farron fun fact.... I have an encyclopedic knowledge for reality tv. I also have an extensive comprehension of many different music genres. I was a music nerd in high school and college. I've gone to A LOT of shows in my day.

Genevieve Davis

June 29, 2017

Genevieve Davis is a vibrant soul, a photographer, surfer, and devoted dog lover. She radiates an infectious zest for life that fills every room with warmth, and she's not shy about busting a move in front of strangers. When she's not riding the waves, you'll likely find her wandering the mountains, tapping into her wild, adventurous spirit. Crossing paths with her is a true delight, leaving you stoked and inspired.

What advice would you give to a woman who is thinking of pursuing a career in photography?

Stick to your guns & know your worth. You're going to be told "no" over and over again, you're going to be talked down to over and over again, you're going to be looked past. You have to have thick skin. Hone in your craft so your skill backs you up. If you don't feel confident, keep practicing & fake it till you make it.

What are some of the obstacles and challenges you have faced with this occupation?

The statistics on male to female photographers are all over the place, but the older generations of professional photographers, photo assistants & techs were definitely dominated by males. The industry is changing rapidly in favor of female photographers, but my personal experience has always been that I am either one of few or the only woman in the room, and often the youngest person in the room. It can be incredibly challenging to feel heard or respected at times. My hope is that by sticking it out and proving my worth it will make it easier for the generation of females that come after me. There are much harder industries for women to be in, but the photography industry-at least in the avenues I've navigated-isn't a beacon of equality quite yet.

What are some of the tips and tricks you used to keep you going during the times you thought about giving up photography all together?

I'll never stop shooting, but I still have frustrating days where I think about giving up photography as a profession. During these times it's important to shoot personal projects and remember why you fell in love with photography to begin with.  I also believe in allowing yourself room for evolution, and there's nothing wrong with moving on if ultimately you decide that's whats best.

What are some of the morals and values you think are important to live by?

Think critically, deconstruct societal standards that were set for you before you were born, & reconstruct a life that works for you. Listen to your gut.

I am acutely aware of my mortality. This practice has helped me become actively grateful for every breath.

Above all foster empathy & kindness. Give everyone the time of day.

Tell me one Genevieve fun fact....

My pipe dream is to move to Colorado & become a cowgirl. I'm pretty determined to make that happen at some point.

Besides photography what are some of the things you are interested in?

I've been riding motorcycles going on 4 years now. I've ridden through 11 states and intend to ride in all 50. I love the outdoors & I use almost all my weekends to get as lost in nature as possible. I write and play music. I'm hoping to release a self-produced EP by the end of the year. I'm not very good but I'm using the punk rock ethos of 3 chords & some lyrics & hoping that sticks. It's not really for anyone but myself anyway.

You say you love everything on wheels.... When did you start rolling around?

In the spirit of the 90s I was really into roller blading when I was young, I can't even remember how old I was when I started, but I was young. In high school I got into skateboarding & downhill bombing, when I was 19 I joined a roller derby league & was a derby doll for 5 years, motorcycles were the next step in a natural evolution. I still love to skate.

What is your morning routine?

Pretty unceremonious. Roll out of bed after clicking the snooze 10x with just enough time to ride my bicycle or motorcycle to work. I get coffee from the coffee bar at our office after I get there, it gives me something to look forward to in the morning.

What is the best advice you received?

Time is not money. You can always make another dollar, you can never make another minute. My dad told me that one.

Please finish these sentences

I work hard to….find balance

my ultimate escape is…in wild, natural places

above all I value….relationships

the meaning of life is…to ease suffering as much as is in your capacity.

Amy Reda

June 20, 2017

Hi friends this week we introduce to @amy_lowry_reda. Amy is a surfer, surf instructor, yogi, environmentalist and all around amazing person and athlete. Follow along this week as we get to know her better.

How did you get into surfing?
I grew up in a beach-house and spent everyday in the water. I really wanted to surf the waves in front of my house, but no one in my family surfed. When my older sister was dating a pro-surfer, I begged him to teach me. When I was 8, he gave me an eighties shortboard and pushed me into a couple of my first waves! I was hooked. I then started going to Scott Morlan's Surf Camps (now Endless Sun Surf School)...and my life changed forever.

Is competitive surfing positive or negative?
Hmm, interesting question ... positive?! I can't really think of why it's negative. If you don't like competitive surfing, then don't do it. I don't care about it anymore because I have other priorities and values in my life now. However, from age 13 to 26, I lived for competitive surfing! I also loved being a part of surf teams, which can be like a family, only with less fighting and more surfing :). Competitive surfing allowed me to release a lot of aggression and emotions in such a healthy way. It also gave me an amazing sense of confidence, which helped in high school and college, and probably helped to keep me out of a lot of trouble. I've met some of my best friends through surf contests; and I met my husband by doing a surf contest (Log Jam, Santa Cruz). In a way, I've had "life-changing" experiences through competitive surfing, and that's why I fully support kids that want to get into it.

What would you say has been your best investment?
Rescuing a dog and marrying my husband... not sure if those are "investments" but they are the best decisions I've made.

What does success mean to you?
Having inner and outer peace.

What is your favorite place to surf in Newport?
Blackies, of course. However, when the waves are good in front of my (childhood) house, it's a rare and beautiful experience!

What was the last awesome thing that happened to you?
I successfully got a group of kids to meditate. At least, I think I did.

What are the principles and values that you believe are important to live by?
Appreciating what you have, what people do for you, and what you've been blessed with. Having compassion for every living creature, even oneself. I'm also a very determined and dedicated person.... my family and friends might even say I have an annoying amount of the former. When faced with decisions, I often ask myself 'what is loving and what is natural? What does my heart tell me to do?'

Tell me an Amy fun fact.
I'm an Irish Dancer.

What is your advice for someone who wants to surf professionally?
I would encourage someone to not look at it that way...to not look at surfing as a job...because then it might become less enjoyable. Rather, I would advise someone to let their talents and passions take them as far as they can go. And to not quit if they lose a contest or a sponsor; to keep going for as long as it makes them happy! Anything and everything is possible.

What is your advice for someone who has never surfed before?
Take a lesson from a surf school (like Endless Sun Surf School :) There's a lot to learn (safety, etiquette, ocean awareness) that you won't get from a YouTube video or from your boyfriend/friend. Also, I think everyone can surf ... it's much more mental than physical.

You recently worked with John Tracy clinic on a camp for kids with hearing loss. Could you tell me a bit about that experience?
Yea! This was me and my husband's fourth year at the camp! We teach kids with hearing loss how to play tennis, soccer, baseball, other sports, and we take them on hikes & nature walks! Despite having hearing loss and other challenges, the kids are positive, happy, strong and amazingly talented! There was a really neat professor at the camp who discussed "the advantages of hearing loss".

Is there any other organizations you like to volunteer with or support?
Yep, I support The Nature Conservancy, Friends of the Earth and Prevent Child Abuse America. A percentage of the proceeds from a children's book that I wrote go to Surfers for Cetaceans and Roots & Shoots, two smaller organizations I also believe in. We also donate surf lessons to charities every year :)

Please finish the following sentences…
I work hard to clear my mind and stay positive.
My ultimate escape is Scotland.
Above all I value peace and love.
The meaning of life is to give.

Meet Michaela Eichenbaum (michenbaum): a New Hampshire native turned California dweller, and the visionary behind @oakstproductions. When she's not orchestrating high-end photo and video shoots, you'll catch her riding the waves at San Onofre or shredding the slopes in the mountains.

Michaela Eichenbaum

June 20, 2017

You co-founded the Ladies Shred Society. Could you tell me a bit about that?

Well, I was wanting to create some sort of an all women's event/movement and found the right fire to get it going. It started small and continued with organic momentum. It's an all women's camping adventure experience... where we surf and snowboard all in a day's work. And then camp together by the fire, drink wine, create content, talk story. And plan the next one ;)

Have you always wanted to start a crew like this? Or is it just something that happened organically?

Yes - I always wanted to start something. I wasn't sure what though. I knew I was passionate and motivated by all women's groups, events, activities, specifically in sport. Looking back at my upbringing I attended all girls summer camps, my Dad would bring me to all women's mountain bike races to show me YOU can do that too!, I went to an all women's college - allowing me to be nurtured and grow up in multiple environments I always felt free to be myself and had so much opportunity to CREATE myself. I didn't realize that connection to my upbringing so closely related to how my path has unraveled today. Kinda awesome! (Thanks MOM & DAD :)

What does success mean to you?

Living PRESENT. Living fully each day. Knowing BALANCE! Working hard but PLAYING hard too! (Are we really here just to work all the time so we can pay our bills? That doesn't really sound fun) Feeling fulfilled by your work. To me it would be working for myself eventually. Creating my own schedule so I am free to explore.

Do you have a mentor or Idol?

I look up to all the other women who are out there leading a pack, a tribe of their people... it takes courage and it's so empowering to see others do it. It's honestly what made me want to start something on my own.

What is the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you?

I guess the weirdest thing would be the way the universe has conspired in my favor multiple times. It has really allowed me to help find my faith in the way this crazy universe works. Every time it happens I find it so strange and then feel like later I am able to reflect and have that aha moment where I'm all... all right universe... I see you <3

Tell me one Michaela fun fact.

I am left-handed and I used to be a ballerina!

Do you have a favorite surf spot?

SanO - before sharknado!! I LOVE Rincon in Santa Barbara too :) I had a magical session there once - I was really down about something. And I just went out solo and surfed my woes away.

What are the principles and values that you believe are important to live by?

Loyalty, honesty, LOVE, compassion, OPEN MINDEDNESS - treat others that way you wish to be treated! Love that one!

What does it mean to have courage?

TEAM GSD (Get SHIT Done!) It means to DO. to LIVE. to BE. to live PRESENTLY and FEARLESSLY. And take RISKS. Dream BIG. Accept that people will laugh at you and think you're crazy but you can't care what they think - you have to know deep down if YOU believe in YOU and YOU put your mind to it you CAN do anything you wish... you just have to stay strong mentally in order to accomplish your wild and crazy dreams. And trust me I've got a LOT of them :)

What do you like more. The mountains or the ocean?

I think I would have to say the ocean. But this is a tough one for me... The ocean is a bit more grounding to me. I grew up on 13 miles of coast in NH so that is a pretty unique thing... I was a beach babe born and raised. The mountains were always weekend adventures and getaways. Opportunities to unplug and live immersed into the GREEN. It's SO green back home where I'm from - it gives me such a peace of mind and disconnect. Which I do not get enough of out here so honestly it can be uncomfortable to me at first. I do think the beach is where my heart and soul feel the most grounded and connected.

Is there anything you cook or bake really well?

I LOVE to cook - right now I am actually assisting a private holistic chef as kind of a side hustle so I am learning a lot about healthy foods. I LOVE cooking and eating healthy! And baking a little bit now too! Most recently, I baked some dairy-free gluten-free cupcakes for my boyfriend's birthday. He's not dairy-free or gluten-free so I realized that decision was a bit selfish ;) But I went through all the efforts of making these "healthy" cupcakes and then I added crushed up Oreos to it... defeating the purpose of the "gluten-free" part haha! Oh well :) They were still a hit.

What does it mean to be strong?

Confidence. Mental strength. Not giving a FUCK what other people think! (I am SO guilty of this!) Also being able to conquer amazing athletic feats to me shows such beautiful strength. Yes, it's physical, but it's SO mental too.

What inspires you?

Other women who do rad shit. Camping - being in nature, COLOR!! SURFING!! Surfing with people who can surf way better than me, or snowboarding with people who can snowboard way better than me! I love surrounding myself with people who I strive to match in strength, skill set, gives me something to set my sights on and chase after. I want to be able to do that too! All women communities, gatherings. Photography! Breathtaking dramatic landscapes. California! EUROPE! Oh Europe. Traveling :) FASHION! So Much... I could keep going...

Beckie Peralta

June 17, 2017

Beckie is a jewlery Designer who runs her own brand called @sine.studio. Her work is timeless and beautiful.

You are a jewelry designer... could you tell me a bit about That? Gladly! I have a jewelry line, SINE based out of Southern California. The line is a collection of geometric & sculptural pieces made with materials ranging from 14k gold to sterling silver and brass.

You spent a few years perfecting your craft, could you tell me a bit about that? The good and the bad. I’m not a traditionally trained jewelry designer so making the transition into the field involved a steep learning curve. It was a little rough at first (heck it still can be) with lots of hours and an unstable income but I was motivated to make it work. In the beginning I did jewelry courses, workshops, and an internship that led to in-house and contract roles for a few brands. The experience I gained in those years was incredible. There’s nothing like being in challenging creative environments to help you grow. Since then I continue to research new materials and techniques, seek inspiration, and learn from the expert craftsmen I work with. There’s always more to learn no matter what field you’re in.

What would be your dream client? A woman who’s easy-going, confident, and has a lighthearted curiosity for life. She’s feminine, yet not too girly and is not afraid to take risks with her style.

Who would you love to see wearing your jewelry? Michelle Obama

What do you think is often the difference between people who are good at what they do and people who are great at what they do? I think that can be pretty subjective, especially when talking about creative fields; but I do believe passion, confidence, curiosity, patience, and persistence all play a role.

What are the most important lessons you have learnt so far, in your career or life journey? This could be anything from very simple small lessons, too much larger bigger lessons. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Be flexible and open to new opportunities yet make sure they are always in line with your larger goals. Make things happen for yourself- don’t wait around for others to. They will never be as invested in your goals as much as you are. Pinpoint the basic key elements that make you happy and grounded in life and make a point to always nurture those. Forgetting to do so can lead to unhappiness and imbalance. Don’t underestimate stress.

What is the best advice you have ever received? When I was 18 I asked a friend for advice on a dating matter or something silly and she responded with, “At the end of the day, you’re going to do what you’re going to do.” It was such a simple response, and clearly not the advice I was looking for, however it has stuck with me since. It’s a good reminder that I can ask for advice left and right, but the opinion that matters most is my own. My intuition and gut are the best indicators of what I should do.

If you were giving advice to someone who was thinking of getting into the jewelry design industry, what would it be? Do it! There is no time like the present. Some people may warn you that the market is oversaturated but don’t let that stop you. Your personal approach is what will make you stand out and have a unique voice. Also keep in mind that not everyone is going to like what you do, and that’s okay.

Describe empowered... Living the life that’s right for you regardless of societal norms or expectations.

Who do you draw inspiration from? Strangers on the streets. I love seeing how people put together everyday outfits and make them their own. Especially in larger cities. I feel that’s where people get a little more brave and creative with their style. I’m also inspired by a lot of female artists and entrepreneurs with small brands out of Southern California right now. Between painters, textile designers, florists, chefs, etc…there’s a lot going on, and with a sense of camaraderie around it. It’s exciting to see.

Please share with me a moment when you had to be most courageous. Moving to New York for a design job. It meant adjusting a serious live-in relationship to a long distance one. It was a risk we both took but it made our relationship stronger and I’m grateful for the work experience that came from it.

What has been your best investment? Studying abroad in Italy. It was the first time I traveled overseas and it was really an eye opening experience as a young adult. It gave me an appreciation and curiosity for other cultures and walks of life.

Tamara Raye

June 14, 2017

Today we introduce you to the super power @tamararaye. She is a mechanical engineer, motorcyclist and plays in a band. She could quite possibly be the smartest woman I have ever met.

1. What is your current occupation?

I am a Mechanical Engineer working in Quality Engineering for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in Machine Design and Materials in the state of California.

2. What are a few of the challenges you face as a woman working in the industry you are in?

As of 2017, only 7.9% of all Mechanical Engineers in the U.S. are women. As such, there are still significant challenges - particularly in that women are held to a higher standard in the field. Every day I try to listen more, learn more, dispel stereotypes, and push the boundaries of traditional gender roles.

3. What is your advice to those woman out there who are thinking about buying a motorcycle?

Take your time! Don't rush out there and buy the first bike you try; be patient, and find the right machine for you. The most important part about learning to ride is being comfortable on your motorcycle. Whether you land on a lil' 175cc around town bike or a 1200cc hog, riding is riding. Be safe, and have fun!

4.  What are some of the principles and values you think are important to live by?

I try and keep it simple - tell the truth. With honesty comes trust, and with trust comes integrity.

5. What do you eat for breakfast and why?

A creature of habit, I eat a banana and yogurt every dang day. You may never know what will happen to you the rest of the day, but you can guarantee my breakfast is consistent.

6. What is one word that describes you?

[I know I said 'understanding' before... but on second thought]. I would say 'patient'. To a fault. Ha!

7. Tell me one Tamara fun fact....

I just found out that I technically qualify to apply for the NASA Astronaut program. Thinking about applying for the next round. Shoot for the stars, right?!

8. What does success mean to you and has it changed over the years?

I've learned that success is a relative term, and the criteria for success doesn't have to be a huge long-term goal. Set small, attainable goals, and milestones on the path to larger ones.

9. What is the best advise you have been given?

The best advice I have ever been given is to stop comparing myself to other people, and its important to remember that everyone's journey is different. Like Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Comparison is the thief of joy."

10. Who has had the biggest impact on your life and perspective?

I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by quite a few people that I find inspirational. But I have to say that my friend Karla, who passed away four years ago, had the largest single impact on my life of anyone that I know. She lived life freely, and without regret. I admired that a great deal.

11. You play in a band. Could you tell me a bit about that?

I am currently playing in a band called WarGirl with five extremely talented musicians. Its a really neat collaboration of sound that we can all lose ourselves in.

12. What is something I should do before I die?

Before any of us die, we should definitely not have any regrets. Do whatever it takes to achieve that goal.
